(GARY) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the disappearance of Tiara Harvey, age 24, of Merrillville, Indiana, after she was last seen struggling in the waters of Lake Michigan off the shore of Miller Beach.
Shortly after 7:45 p.m. Monday evening, Indiana Conservation Officers were informed of a person missing in the water. Upon the arrival of first responders, Harvey had still not been located.
Harvey was swimming in the water with two friends when all three attempted to return to shore because of high waves and strong currents. A good Samaritan was able to help the two survivors back to shore. Witnesses reported seeing Harvey go under and not return to the surface.
An initial search was conducted by the Lake County Marine Unit, Lake County Aviation Unit, United States Coast Guard, and Gary Police and Fire departments. A diver from the Gary Fire Department also entered the water to conduct a search. Due to darkness, and dangerous wave and rip current activity, the search was postponed until this morning.
Search efforts were resumed this morning with shore-based searches by Indiana Conservation Officers, Gary Police Department, and Gary Fire. A search of the area by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Aviation Unit was also conducted. A water-based search is being performed by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit and Indiana Conservation Officers will be attempting to use side scan sonar technology to search the area by boat today.
No additional information is available at this time.
