(VIGO CO.) - The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office says its received reports of computer ransomware attacks on personal computers.
The public is reminded to frequently back up computer data onto external media so information is protected against ransomware attacks.
Ransomware is a type of malicious software that threatens to publish the victim's data or perpetually block access to it unless a ransom is paid.
Ransomware attacks are typically carried out using a Trojan that is disguised as a legitimate file that the user is tricked into downloading or opening when it arrives as an email attachment.
Paying a ransom does not guarantee your computer will be unlocked nor what your charges will be.
If your computer is infected, a computer repair business may be able to help.
