(LAKE CO.) - Indiana Conservation Officers and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a double drowning of two young children yesterday at LaSalle Fish & Wildlife Area along the Kankakee River and Stateline Road, in southern Lake County near Schneider.
Two fisherman were fishing near the historic bridge and contacted 911, at 4:35pm, to report their concerns of two men in the area with two young children and their well-being.
Newton County Officers were immediately dispatched to the area. While the officers were responding to the scene, the fishermen had lost sight of the children and began looking for them.
One of the fisherman located one of the children floating on top of water, and the second child was found under the water near the boat ramp.
Both children were pulled from the water, unresponsive, and CPR was started.
Newton County Sheriff's Department, Newton County EMS, Lake Township Fire Department, Newton County Drug Task Force, Lake County Sheriff's Department, and Indiana Conservation Officers all responded to the scene.
One child was transported to Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee, IL and the other child was transported to St. Anthony's Franciscan Health in Crown Point, IN. Both of the children were pronounced deceased the respective hospitals.
The names of the children and witnesses are not being released.
The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
