Caucus To Choose Replacement For Senator David Long

Last updated on Tuesday, September 25, 2018

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana Republican Party State Chairman Kyle Hupfer officially called a caucus of eligible precinct committee members to fill the upcoming vacancy in the office of Senate District 16. The seat is currently held by Senate President Pro Tem David Long, whose retirement from the Senate will be effective November 6.

The caucus will be held at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, at the Allen County Republican Party Headquarters at 135 West Main St.; Fort Wayne, IN 46802.

Chairman Hupfer received official communication from the Indiana Senate concerning Senator Long's retirement on September 18. The individual selected at the October 9 caucus will fill the remainder of Senator Long's term.

"Under David Long's 12 years of leadership in the Senate, Indiana has transformed from a middle-of-the-pack state to a national leader in balanced budgets and responsible government," said Hupfer. "Hoosiers will miss Senator Long's solutions-driven leadership at the Statehouse, but I look forward to watching the great work that Northeast Indiana's newest senator -- who will be selected at this caucus -- will deliver."

Individuals interested in running in the caucus should contact the State Party Secretary at secretary@indiana.gop to ensure they file the proper forms prior to the deadline, which is 72 hours prior to the vote. The caucus will be open to credentialed media who pre-register to Pete Seat at pseat@indiana.gop prior to 5:00 p.m. ET on Monday, Oct. 8.

A Facebook Live Stream will be available at www.facebook.com/indgop for members of the public who wish to watch the caucus live. More details regarding caucus procedures and candidates will be released after the filing deadline.
