(BEVERLY SHORES) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a water-related incident that occurred at approximately 12:25 p.m. on Wednesday, in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore waters of Lake Michigan, offshore from Lake View Beach.
The initial, joint investigation between Indiana Conservation Officers and Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park Rangers revealed at approximately 12:25 p.m. 56-year-old Gwen McKibbin of New Braunfels, Texas was approximately 10 to 15 yards from shore when she told a nearby relative she was having trouble breathing.
The relative carried McKibbin to shore on her back and upon arriving on shore, McKibbin was found to be unresponsive and CPR was initiated by a nearby beachgoer.
Emergency responders arrived on scene and Mickibbin was transported to St. Anthony's Hospital in Michigan City where she remains in critical condition.
The investigation is ongoing at this time and the initial cause of the incident is pending investigation. No further information is available at this time.
Assisting agencies were Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park Rangers, Beverly Shores Police Department, Beverly Shores Fire Department, Porter Fire Department, Porter Regional Ambulance and Porter County Central Communications.
