(ELIZABETHTOWN) — Authorities say two southern Indiana sheriff’s deputies crawled through heavy smoke to rescue a man from his burning home.
The Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department says Deputies Andrew Dougan and Robert Coop rescued Walter Pardieck from the fire about 4 a.m. Tuesday at the rural home near Elizabethtown, about 50 miles southeast of Indianapolis.
When the deputies arrived on the scene of the fire, Pardieck's wife told them her husband was still inside. The department says the deputies crawled through the living room but were unable to reach the rear of the residence because of flames and heavy smoke. The deputies then entered through another door, tracked Pardieck through his yelling, reached him and pulled him to safety.
The department says Pardieck was treated for smoke inhalation but refused further treatment.
