(EAST CHICAGO, Ind.) - Authorities say a 15-year-old high school student has been arrested after allegedly wounding a classmate with a box cutter during a fight at their school in northwestern Indiana.
Brenda Richmond said her 16-year-old son, Omar Kinnie, was stabbed in the abdomen Tuesday at East Chicago Central High School. She says he's recovering after getting 15 stitches.
Kinnie says he initially "didn't even know" he was hurt.
Superintendent Paige McNulty tells The (Northwest Indiana) Times a teacher witnessed the fight in a classroom and noticed a slash in the teen's side after the students were separated. She says a security officer was onsite and quickly responded.
East Chicago police said Wednesday that the 15-year-old is facing a battery charge as a juvenile and he has denied responsibility for the attack.
