Winter Forecast Predicts A Wetter-Than-Normal Season In Indiana
Last updated on Wednesday, November 21, 2018
(UNDATED) - It’s going to be a wet one, at least in some parts of the country. And, today, it’s cold in Indiana, with rain in the forecast.
That's the official word from national weather forecasters who say that this winter is expected to be a wetter-than-normal season for many parts of the Midwest.
The winter months have always been the traditional American season of hearth and home, holidays, cold-weather sporting events, and for many, fun frolic in the snow. But there are various precautions for both adults and children to keep in mind while playing or working during the wintertime -- especially when it comes to over-exposure to the cold, safety in the snow or rain and preventable injuries.
MedExpress Urgent Care health care professionals, who practice locally, know all about the various challenges the winter months bring and how people of all ages can prepare for the season and enjoy it in safer and healthier ways.
- COLD TEMPERATURES: The cold weather can cause serious health problems, particularly for those who spend a lot of time outdoors. The most common cold-related health problems are hypothermia and frostbite. It's important to know the risk factors and the signs and symptoms.
- SAFETY & INJURIES: The cold, snowy and wet weather can lead to slippery and dangerous conditions. That means extra precautions, particularly for the elderly and those on certain medications, should be taken to avoid slips, trips and falls in and around the home or otherwise when out and about.
- ILLNESS PREVENTION: Because people are spending more time indoors, frequent handwashing is important to help prevent you from getting or spreading colds, viruses or other illnesses. And when it comes to prevention, getting a flu vaccine can be one of the best steps to take -- not only for yourself but for those around you.
- WINTER FITNESS: During the hub-bub of holidays and vacations, the colder, busier months of winter can cause people to get distracted or discouraged when it comes to their exercise routines. It's important to stay on track with your fitness schedule, including getting enough sleep and proper nutrition, to help stay happy and positive throughout the season.
- HOLIDAY TRAVEL HEALTH: Now is the time of year when many people are finalizing their holiday plans, which often include holiday travel. It's especially important to remember healthy habits while traveling this time of year, as cold and flu viruses are circulating. Learn what health items are great to have in your travel kit as well as some tips to stay healthy on a plane or road trip.
