Charles “Charlie” Austin Elkins – Bedford
March 9, 1947 – January 4, 2017
Charles “Charlie” Austin Elkins, 69, of Bedford, passed away on January 4, 2017, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born March 9, 1947, in Bedford, he was the son of Claude Austin “Abe” and Mabel Marie (Hobson) Elkins. He married Cora Melvin on February 14, 1994; and she survives. Charles retired from the Bedford Fire Department. He was former Town Marshall of Oolitic.
He attended Bedford High School. Charles was a member of the Bedford Boat and Sportsman Club, the Bedford Moose, the Mitchell American Legion #250, Eagles of Bedford, Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F&AM, and the F.O.P.
Surviving are his wife, Cora Elkins, of Bedford; one son, Scott A. (Rhonda) Elkins, of Seymour; one daughter, Connie (Greg) Dalton, of Mitchell; four grandchildren, Courtney and Rebekah Elkins, and Emily and Sarah Dalton; one sister, Mary Ann (Jim) Jenkins; four step-daughters, Pam (Jerry) Hillenburg, Anita (Barry) Turpin, Tamara Hughes, and Paula (Tim) Ely; one step-son, Timothy (Carrie) Magnus; fourteen step grandchildren; and sixteen step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Sandy McGrath and Connie Mathews; one step grandson, Lance Cpl., Eric Dean Hillenburg; and one step great-grandchild, Blaydan Heath Cobb.
Funeral service will be on Monday, January 9, 2017 at 11 a.m., at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel, with Pastor Jerry Hillenburg officiating. Burial will be in Dive Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. till 4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Masonic rites will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Sunday by the Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F&AM. Moose rites will be held at 5 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Avanell Maxine Mitchell – Bedford

Avanell Maxine Mitchell, 88, of Bedford, died at 5:23 a.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at White River Lodge.
Born March 20, 1928 in Lawrence Co., she was the daughter of Norman Richard Olson, Sr. and Myrtle Grace (Studley) Olson. She married her high school sweetheart, Lester Wayne “Coke” Mitchell on July 30, 1948 and he preceded her in death on November 16, 2009. She was a clerical worker at Dunn Memorial Hospital and worked with her family at the N.R. the Olson Real Estate and Insurance Agency. After her retirement, she volunteered as a Pink Lady at Dunn Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include three daughters, Brenda Stogsdill and husband, Jim, Debbie “Red” Miller and husband, Steve, all of Bedford and Cheryl Strickler, of Bloomington; three grandchildren, Melissa Beasley, of Albuquerque, NM, Brandon Brown, of Bedford and Cody Strickler, of Bloomington; two great grandchildren, Ethan Brown, and Madelynn Strickler; a brother, Volney Olson, and wife, Zenobia, of Bedford; a sister-in- law, Marilyn Olson; close personal friend, Debi Deer, and husband, Phil, who are considered family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Norman Olson, Jr. , and a sister, Gaynel Meglemre.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with John Flinn officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, January 9th at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
The family asks that friends consider memorial contributions be made to the Lawrence County Boys and Girls Club.
