(OWENSBURG) – The woman who shot 31-year-old Dustin Abel is claiming she shot and killed him in self-defense on Tuesday morning.
Indiana State Police and Greene County Sheriff’s Department were called to the home in the 7200 block of State Road 58 after a woman claimed she shot Abel after he attempted to enter the home. Police say the two were in a romantic relationship and were in a domestic dispute at the time of the shooting.
Police say Abel died from a single gunshot wound to the head as he rushed through the door of the home just before 10:30 a.m.
Greene County Detective Sgt. Jim O’Malley says the woman was visibly upset when they arrived on the scene. She told police she told Abel to leave or risk being shot.
The woman had called police earlier in the day saying Abel had been at the house earlier that day and she was afraid of him. The woman then called 911 reporting Abel had returned, and she had shot him saying she feared for her life.
No charges have been filed against the woman, and the investigation is ongoing.
Abel is survived by his parents David Fred Abel and Marshiella Renee Morgan and a daughter Tiara Abel. His funeral was held Friday in Bloomfield.
