(BEDFORD) – Judy Macy State Farm made a $473 donation to the Lawrence County Patient Services.
“Quotes For Good” is a program developed by State Farm Insurance.
This year, Judy Macy State Farm has chosen to donate to organizations that have a bigger impact on the community. The first organization she donated to this year was the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County.
“We try to give back to the community,” said Macy.
When Judy’s husband was diagnosed with cancer she said, “I was not aware of the Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services. We thought this would be an excellent way to help out the organization and as well as let the public know about the organization,” Macy continued. “We try to donate to one to three organizations a year. There is not a customer who is not impacted by cancer.”
Judy Heichelbech, president of the Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services, accepted the donation. Heichelbech explained some of the things the organization does.
“Not only are we seeking donations, but really trying to find ways to speak to organizations, churches, and clubs to bring awareness of what we do,” she added.
The organization was started in the early 1980s by Wanda Starr, who wanted to provide help to those dealing with cancer. Teena Lingman, a long-time member, also serves as a patient advocate.
Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services helps cancer patients with gas cards on long trips to Indianapolis and Bloomington for chemo and radiation treatments.
The organization has a storage facility with wheelchairs, walkers, and commodes for those dealing with cancer.
“Support IU Health Cancer Unit is offering comfort kits when patients are first diagnosed, also offering supplements of Ensure and Boost, provide wigs for those who lose hair during treatment, and a lady designs turbines for those who wish not to use a wig,” Heichelbech added.
Last year, the organization helped more 140 patients using more than $76,000 to address their needs.
Lawrence County Cancer Patient services will host their 18th Annual Car, Truck, Bike, and Tractor Show at Bedford Ford on September 7 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
“The event is one of the biggest fundraisers for the organization and we encourage everyone to come and help out a worthy cause,” said Heichelbach.
