Obituary: Mildred L. “Smokey” (Watson) Cummings

March 23, 1926 – September 22, 2019

Mildred L. “Smokey” (Watson) Cummings, 93, of Bedford, died at 12:47 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, 2019, at White River Lodge.

Born March 23, 1926, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Thomas and Kate (Swain) Watson. She retired from Naval Submarine Base in Kingsbay, GA after thirty-three years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and
American Rosie the Riveter Assoc. She was a former member of the Limestone Girls Club Board of Directors and assistant coach for softball, basketball and taught tennis. She had been a Brownie Scout Leader, Treasurer for the Sea Castle Assoc. in Fernandina Beach, FL, Captain
of several tennis teams in the First Coast Tennis League of Jacksonville, FL, Captain of VSTA team in Fernandina Beach, FL, member of the Historical Society of Lawrence Co., and volunteer in the museum and research library.

Survivors include two sons, Ron Cummings, of Bedford and Tom Cummings, of Mesa, AZ; two daughters, Patsy Becker, of Bedford and Cara Cummings, of Oklahoma City, OK; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, James W. Watson and T. Edgar Watson; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Apple-Cummings; a granddaughter, Cassidy Mae Clements, and a niece, Jane Watson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 28th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the hour of service on Saturday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
