According to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur in the United States each year, and more than 35,000 people die as a result.
The CDC warned that antibiotic-resistant bacteria and fungi, which were once confined mostly in hospitals, are spreading aggressively now in communities.
In his introductory letter for this report, CDC Director Robert Redfield stated that “our nation must stop referring to a coming post-antibiotic era – it’s already here.”
