(BEDFORD) – Seymour didn’t need an 18-point head start to overwhelm Bedford North Lawrence on Thursday night. The Owls were tough enough without help.
The Stars forfeited the three lower weight classes, and the Owls recorded five pins among the seven victories in the contested matches to smack down BNL 54-18.
BNL had three winners on the mat, but that wasn’t enough to overcome the point deficit or Seymour’s strength advantage.
“Not a very good night tonight,” BNL coach Greg Stevens said. “I wasn’t expecting this.”
BNL’s wins came in the middle weights. Reese Hamblen, hobbled by an injury, recorded two takedowns to stop Alex Schlatterer 4-0 at 152 pounds, and Drake Huber hammered down Conner Ellis in 51 seconds at 170.
Christian Brown capped the match for the Stars with a 8-6 conquest of Hector Rosa at 182.
“Reese basically played defense because he couldn’t do a shot (at a leg takedown for points),” Stevens said. “Drake was impressive.”
Seymour’s Carlos Ortiz edged Byron Kyger 4-3 with a late penalty point at 285, and Brody Shipley edged out a 1-0 victory over Gunner Connaughton at 195.
The five Seymour pins came from Ty Woods (44 seconds over Hunter Morris at 126), Nate Bannister (in 4:29 over Derek Hutchens at 132), Ben Kriete (in 1:42 over Chandler Engleking at 138), Jake Kriete (in 1:32 over Jayden Trostle at 145) and Jake Roder (in 2:59 over Conner Smith at 160).
The Stars will return to action at Bloomington North on Saturday.
