(INDIANAPOLIS) – State Sen. Eric Bassler, R-Washington, will serve as chair of the Interim Study Committee on Financial Institutions and Insurance during the summer and fall to help prepare lawmakers for the 2020 legislative session. He will also serve on the Interim Study Committee on Fiscal Policy and as co-chair of the National Conference of State Legislators 2020 Legislative Summit Host Committee.
Bassler says the coming session is a budget year for our state, and the changes that have occurred with COVID-19 within Indiana’s economy over the last several months will undoubtedly have an impact on the 2021 legislative session.
Bassler said he has spent a lot of time listening to concerns of superintendents across the state and hopes to continue that. He also wants to further investigate Indiana’s school funding formula and how it takes into account the number of students living in poverty.
When Indiana’s part-time legislature is not in session, lawmakers serve on interim study committees that meet to review the state’s top issues, as identified by the General Assembly during the prior legislative session.
Study committee topics are assigned by the bipartisan Legislative Council, comprised of 16 voting members — eight from the Senate and eight from the House of Representatives.
