(MORGAN COUNTY) — Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Force Construction plans to switch traffic on the S.R. 67 bridges over Little White Lick Creek in Mooresville on Wednesday, July 15, weather permitting. The superstructure replacement project, which began last fall, is moving into phase three of construction.
Currently, traffic is restricted to one inside lane in each direction. On Wednesday, both inside lanes will close and traffic will move to one newly-constructed outside lane in each direction across the northbound and southbound bridges. In this configuration, crews will demolish and reconstruct the inside half of each bridge.
During this phase, the left-turn lane to S.R. 42 from northbound S.R. 67 will be closed. Traffic will be diverted further north to Hadley Road, where motorists will utilize a left U-turn only lane to southbound S.R. 67 to S.R. 42. The lane closure will be in place for the remainder of the project.
As a reminder, a zipper merge remains in place at the bridges to help maintain traffic flow. Zipper merges allow drivers to utilize both travel lanes until the second lane ends, at which point traffic should alternate and allow drivers in the closed lane to merge. Zipper merges have proven to help reduce congestion and back-ups in high-traffic areas.
The $4.1 million contract is currently expected to be complete by October 31, 2020. Motorists should slow down, use extra caution, and drive distraction-free through all work zones. All work is weather dependent.
