GALENA – Bedford North Lawrence sophomore Emma Gabhart won two events and set a school record during the girls Hoosier Hills Conference swimming meet on Saturday afternoon at Floyd Central.
Gabhart touched first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.68, shattering the mark of 1:09.39 set by Hayley Hatfield in 2018. Gabhart also claimed the 200 individual medley in 2:12.80.
“It’s really exciting,” Gabhart said. “I’m just thankful for the coaches and teammates pushing me. And I was glad to have some competition to help me go fast.”
Gabhart had approached the record during recent meets.
“I was getting pretty frustrated,” she said. “I hadn’t been able to get under the right time. I didn’t think I was going to be able to do it until the sectional, so I’m glad to get that done.”
BNL finished fifth in the team standings with 129 points. Floyd Central won the team championship with 386.
“We didn’t quite stack up as a team, however we had a mountain of PRs from just about every swimmer,” BNL coach Adam Young said. “That’s a very good sign heading into our sectional taper. Everyone did a really good job. A special day!”
The Stars finished second in the 400 freestyle relay as Gabhart teamed with Ursula Patton, Kaitlyn Hackney and Shelby Slaughter to finish in 4:00.67. The Highlanders won that event in 3:54.46.
BNL will return to action on Tuesday against Seymour.
