BEDFORD – The Lawrence County Commissioners Tuesday morning, heard from Rex Knight of Southern Indiana Development Commission informing the Lawrence County Commissioner about an increase of cost for the new wastewater treatment plant in the Judah area.
The county received a $700,000 grant through the Office of Community and Rural Affairs on behalf of the South-Central Regional Sewer District to build a new wastewater treatment plant. The Lawrence County Commissioners were just a conduit for the grant application.
The current wastewater treatment plant was built in the mid-1970s and serves 117 residents and area businesses in the Briarwood and Judah area. Officials say the utility service needs to be updated.
The sewer district is responsible for their portion of the cost for the project but learned the only bid they received came in at $82,000 more than expected. The sewer district informed the commissioners they will commit additional funds to cover the cost of the project.
The sewer district will increase its contribution from $150,000 to $235,000.
“None of the funds will come from the county, but from sewer district funds,” said Commissioner Rodney Fish.
The project will begin in March or April. The hope is to complete the project by September 2021.
