BEDFORD – A Bedford woman was arrested Wednesday for theft after Bedford Police investigators say she stole from Walmart by scanning lower-priced items for more expensive ones.
Officers were alerted to the incident on February 5, 2021. The store’s asset protection associate says 35-year-old Alicia Godsey did this during at least six different transactions at the store.
Godsey was caught on security video shopping throughout the store selecting several items. At the self check out, Godsey scanned a lower-priced DVD instead of scanning the higher-priced items.
Police said Godsey continued this practice many times while shopping at Walmart. Each time she would select a lower price item to scan or replace the barcode on the higher-priced item with a lower-priced barcode.
Godsey told police, she learned from others how to switch barcodes from one product to another. She admitted to the actions and said she was broke and barely able to pay her bills. She now is employed and can pay Walmart restitution for the theft.
The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office and a warrant was issued for her arrest.
