BLOOMINGTON – The Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University Bloomington is ranked second for its master’s program in public affairs in the just-released U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate School rankings.
Three specialty areas at the O’Neill School are ranked No. 1, and overall the programs in Bloomington and Indianapolis have nine specialties in the top 10.
For five years, the O’Neill School has ranked in one of the top two spots of the U.S. News rankings.
“The O’Neill School continues to further cement its reputation as a national and world leader in the study of public affairs and public policy,” IU President Michael A. McRobbie said. “The school’s consistent top ranking reflects its commitment to educating and inspiring the coming generation of leaders and decision-makers. These are students who will work here in Indiana, across the country and around the world to improve the lives of their communities and to address and find solutions to some of our society’s most vexing challenges.
“The high rankings for many of our schools and programs are a credit to our excellent faculty of outstanding ability who are innovators in their fields and whose scholarship, research and reputations are central to IU’s standing. The O’Neill School is proud to again have two world-class rankings in this year’s edition of the Best Graduate Schools,” O’Neill Dean Siân Mooney said. “Both the Bloomington and IUPUI locations earned high marks. This external recognition by our peers reflects the tireless commitment of our faculty, staff and students throughout one of the most challenging periods in recent history.”
The programs in environmental policy and management, nonprofit management, and public finance and budgeting all ranked No. 1. Public management and leadership ranked second, public policy analysis third, and the nonprofit management program at IUPUI fourth.
Other top programs include local government management, and health policy and management, which each ranked seventh, and social policy, which ranked 10th. Additionally, the urban policy program at IUPUI ranked 22nd.
The U.S. News rankings are based on statistical and reputational data about graduate programs at U.S. colleges and universities collected in fall 2019 and early 2020.
Other programs ranking highly include the Kelley School of Business, the School of Education, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the Maurer School of Law and the McKinney School of Law.
The full-time Master of Business Administration program at the Kelley School of Business remains ranked in a tie for 23rd. The part-time Evening MBA program at IUPUI is tied for 10th, and Kelley Executive Degree Programs are ranked 26th. Eight specialties within the school made the top 20: entrepreneurship ranked eighth; accounting and marketing each ranked 11th; business analytics, information systems and management each ranked 14th; production operations ranked 15th; and supply chain ranked 19th.
Nine graduate programs at the IU School of Education in Bloomington earned top 25 rankings, with five in the top 10. Secondary education tied for fifth, higher education ranked seventh, elementary education and student counseling each ranked eighth, and curriculum and instruction ranked 10th. The school tied for 41st overall.
“Students in our programs go on to make invaluable contributions to the world through their work,” Interim Dean Anastasia Morrone said. “I am truly proud of our programs earning this recognition, and we’re excited to continue the vital work of preparing our students for their careers.”
Some of the other ranked programs include:
- The library and information studies master’s programs at both IU Bloomington and IUPUI ranked highly. IU Bloomington’s master’s program in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering ranked ninth. The master’s program in the School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI tied for 27th. Within the program rankings, three IU Bloomington programs ranked in the top 10: digital librarianship and information systems, each tied for eighth, and archives and preservation, tied for ninth.
- The IU School of Medicine ranked 19th for pediatrics and 31st in the diversity index, which measures the percentage of medical school enrollment from under-represented minorities. The School of Medicine tied for 36th in the area of primary care and tied for 42nd in research.
- The IU School of Nursing master’s degree program ranked 43rd, while its doctorate in nursing program tied for 53rd.
- IU’s two schools of law also rank highly. The IU Bloomington Maurer School of Law’s graduate program, which is full time, is tied for 43rd. The part-time program at the McKinney School of Law at IUPUI is 48th. The McKinney program ranked in a tie for 16th in health care law.
- Several programs within the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington earned high rankings, including African history, ranked seventh; the British literature program in the Department of English, ranked 13th; and the sociology program, which tied for 16th overall and ranked 11th in the social stratification program.
