SEYMOUR – Colten Girgis carded a 79 as Bedford North Lawrence finished fourth in the season-opening Seymour Invitational during boys golf action at Shadowood on Saturday.
Girgis finished second in the race for individual honors. The Stars posted a team total of 357, settling behind Columbus North (312), Columbus North’s second unit (350) and Seymour (353).
“We went there with no expectations,” BNL coach Mike Wright said. “It didn’t surprise me. Most of these guys haven’t played in a tournament before. There was a little bit of pressing. I didn’t expect 357, but it could have been worse.”
Girgis, after waiting out a 75-minute frost delay, scrambled his way around, hitting only five greens and posting only one birdie.
“He just kept the ball in play,” Wright said. “He was able to avoid trouble and putted better over there than he did at home all week. When you can putt, it makes up for mistakes.”
Ramzi Girgis carded 89, Trevin Hutchison totaled 90, and Jackson Jones finished with 99 to complete BNL’’s scoring.
“It was just good to be back out there and the kids understand that,” Wright said. “There was enough positives in the round to take away and work on things. They won’t get too high or too low.”
Columbus North’s Luke Schneider was the medalist with a 71. Owen Marshall had an 80 for Seymour.
The Stars will return to Otis Park for the home opener against Bloomington South on Thursday.
