SCOTTSBURG – Bedford North Lawrence recorded two wins in the consolation round of the Scott County Invitational on Saturday.
The Stars bounced Providence 3-2 as the No.1 doubles duo of Bella Stigall and Mallory Pride won a marathon match for the deciding point. BNL (5-6) followed that with a 4-1 triumph over North Harrison.
Against the Pioneers, Stigall and Pride (who are now 11-1 as a tandem) got pushed to the limit before posting a tense 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Ally Gray and Reese Carver.
BNL also won at No.2 singles, with Emily Duncan decking Katie Riggs 6-0, 6-1, and at No.2 doubles as Kenley Craig and Izzy Alldredge topped Maya Paris and Reese Upton 6-2, 7-5.
“Our No.1 doubles had quite the match,” BNL coach Joni Stigall said. “They were on the court for quite some time. They met some good players and a few errors at bad times got them down a little.
“They had to fight for the win and at times I wasn’t so confident. But they pulled it out against a really good team.”
In the second match, BNL swept the doubles and added two singles wins. Rachel Kidd stopped Isabelle Nordhoff 6-2, 2-6, 10-4 (in a tiebreaker third set) at No.1, while Duncan handled McKenna Pearson 7-5, 6-3 at No.2.
“Rachel played very well,” Stigall said. “I am so happy that she got that win. It was long overdue.
“I am so pleased with our overall play. We won two tough matches against two good teams. We are getting there, one match at a time.”
In doubles, Stigall and Pride pounded Emily Bowen and Olivia Wise 6-2, 6-1, while Craig and Alldredge needed a third set to top Hope Whittaker and Kendyl Lasley 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
BNL will visit Columbus East on Monday.
