BEDFORD – The North Lawrence Community School board approved the resignation of 34 employees. Ten teaching contracts were also not renewed during their regular meeting Thursday.
Of those resignations, 17 were from teachers and 17 from support staff employees.
During the meeting, JoAnna Hackney a North Lawrence Community School employee for more than 18 years as both a middle school teacher and counselor addressed the board to tell them why she was leaving the school corporation. A complete statement from Hackney is listed below.
Following Hackney’s statement to the NLCS school board, the crowd applauded. NLCS school board member Kirsten Collier thanked her for her service to NLCS.
Karla Hudson a Food Service employee also addressed the board expressing concerns about the work environment and turnover.
The crowd again applauded after she addressed the board.
Both Hackney and Hudson have found other jobs. Hackney is now an academic advisor at Indiana University and Hudson is now an employee of the newly formed Lawrence County Independent Schools.
In January 2020 the North Lawrence School board voted to close five schools which included four elementary schools and one middle school.
According to Superintendant Ty Mungle, the corporation needed to consolidate the schools due to $1.4 million in deficit spending and was nearing a state take over of the school corporation. The school corporation was putting more than 20 percent of the educational budget into the operations budget.
However, Indiana State Board of Accounts examiner Paul Joyce told WISH-TV in a report Thursday night, that the North Lawrence Community Schools Corporation was not anywhere near a state take over.
Joyce also stated that when the State Board of Accounts went to the district for their normal audit, the district books were not ready which Joyce calls “not normal”.
The Indiana State Board of Accounts will be returning for an audit and reviewing for claims of fraud.
