Sandra Martindale

April 17, 1935 – August 2, 2021

Sandra Martindale, 86, of Bedford, died Monday, August 2 at 12:10 a.m. at the home of her daughter, Paige.

Born Sandra Joy Flinn on April 17, 1935, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Orin and Hazel (Harp) Flinn.  She married L. Eugene Martindale on May 25, 1956, and he preceded her in death on October 18, 2000.  She was proud of being a direct descendant of a Jamestown settler of 1612, Alfred Houston, and of Jacob Flinn, who was in a group who settled what is now Lawrence County in 1810.

She graduated from Shawswick High School in 1952 as valedictorian and earned a B.S. degree with high distinction in 1955 and a M.A.T. degree in 1958 from Indiana University.  She taught at Bloomfield High School and Shawswick High School.

She was a member of Central church of Christ, the John Wallace Chapter of the D.A.R., and had been a volunteer at the Lawrence County Museum of History, where she had displayed some of her collections.

Survivors include daughter Paige (Steve) Tow, granddaughter Shelby Lamb (Garrett), and grandson Ryan Tow.  Surviving sisters are Kay Waskom of Bedford and Helen Lozano of Griffith.  Surviving stepsisters are Cecy (Keith) Dillman of Williams and Laura Voorhies of North Port, Florida.  One uncle, Charles Harp of Hawthorn, Nevada.  Also, surviving are sisters-in-law Linda Green (Don) and Mildred Martindale, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was known for her many hobbies (over 100), sweepstakes prizes, seeing and meeting famous people, and traveling to all 50 states and many foreign countries.  She hoped she would be remembered for her love of God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit, the church of Christ, her country, and her family.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 7th at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Brother Rick Leach officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, August 6, and from 11 until the service hour on Saturday at Day & Carter.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Lawrence County Museum of History.
