LAWRENCE CO. – During a budget hearing on Thursday night Ron Walker, Director of the Lawrence County Solid Waste District, presented the Lawrence County Council with a budget increase of 38.65 percent.
The plan for the submitted budget increase would to apply the funds towards improvements at the Lawrence County Recycling Centers, specifically to address the increased traffic flow on Saturdays at the center, causing long lines.
The budget for the project is at $4,009,700 and without the project the budget will be at $3,094,700. The budget without the project would only be a 7 percent increase.
Tax rates for 2022 will remain the same. The district will consider bonds, utilizing a local bank, or ARP funds to be able to fund the project.
The other increases in the budget include an 8 percent pay increase for employees. The recycling center had to hire more personnel to keep up with the higher demand of people using the facility.
There are 9 remote transfer stations in Lawrence County including the transfer station at the Recycling Center.
