INDIANA – More than 70 rural and volunteer fire departments from 46 counties have been awarded more than $319,000 in Volunteer Fire Assistance grants, DNR Director Dan Bortner announced Thursday.
The awarded grants range from $1,590 to $5,000 and were given to 73 departments.
Receiving grants locally are:
- Marion Township Rural Fire Dept., Inc. in Lawrence County received $2,500 for safety
- Marshall Township Volunteer Fire Department in Lawrence County recevied $2,500 for safety
- Shawswick Volunteer Firefighters Association in Lawrence received $5,000 for safety
- Ellettsville Fire Department in Monroe County $2,500 for water handling
- Monroe Fire Protection District in Monroe County received $5,000 for wildland
- Center-Jackson Fire Territory in Greene County received $4,994.50 for safety
- Taylor Township Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. in Greene County received $5,000 for safety
- Hamilton Township Volunteer Fire Department in Jackson County received $1,590 for communication
- Owen Township Volunteer Fire Department in Jackson County received $5,000 for safety
- Brown County Volunteer Fire Department in Brown County received $1,728 for water handling
- Southern Brown Volunteer Fire Department in Brown County received $5,000 for wildland
- A & A Township Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. in Morgan County received $5,000 for wildland
- Gregg Township Fire Department in Morgan County received $2,500 for safety
- Washington Township Fire Department in Morgan County received $5,000 for safety
- Southwest Bartholomew Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. in Bartholomew County received $5,000 for safety
- Celestine Volunteer Fire Department in Dubois County received $4,975 for water handling
- Dubois Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. in Dubois County received $4,224.50 for safety
- Madison Township Volunteer Fire Department in Dubois County received $4,577 for communication
- St. Anthony Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. in Dubois County received $4,200 for safety
The awards will be used for training, installation of dry hydrants, or purchasing necessary firefighting equipment and gear to combat wildland fires. The grants are administered by the DNR Division of Forestry and made available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.
Recipients were selected based on population density, acres of public wildlands protected, and wildland fire reporting to DNR Fire Control Headquarters. As in past years, emphasis was given to projects that involve the fighting of wildfires.
