Betty Jo Taflinger, 88, passed away Friday, October 8, 2021, at her home.
Born April 23, 1933, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Elmer and Lelia (Williamson) Smith. She married Newton Andrew “Newt” Taflinger September 30, 1981, and he preceded her in death May 24, 2011.
Betty had been a waitress in the Bloomington area and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 9107. She loved to travel and spent many winters in Florida. Betty was an avid reader, enjoyed her animals, and was an excellent seamstress and crafter.
Surviving: children, Sherry Melski of Indiana, Treva Carron of Bedford, Tammy Banks (Paul) Wilber of Bloomington, stepchildren, Rick (Leatta) Taflinger of Avocz, Cheryl (Kenny) Watterson of Granger,Tona (Anthony) Dobson of Jasper, Georgia, Beth (Ken) Compton of Venice, Florida, Sheila (Eddy) Grubb of Orleans; grandchildren, Sandra Strunk, Teresa Voorhies (caregiver), David Carron, Chris Carron, Joni Vibbart, Jawna Banks, Janelle Deckard; several step grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren.
Her parents; husband; son-in-law, Robert Melski; stepson, Mike Taflinger; and siblings, Louis Smith, Agnes Meadows, Alma Smith, Viola Jackson, Leslie Smith, Audrey Myers, Norman Smith, and infants, Leon Smith and Ethel Smith, preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 14, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Reverend Aaron Wardlaw officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the service on Thursday at the funeral home.
