BRAZIL – Bedford North Lawrence won three matches and finished third among eight teams in the Northview Invitational on Saturday.
The Stars dropped a 63-18 decision to Terre Haute North, conquered George Washington 36-21, topped Danville 54-24, fell to Northview 54-27, then capped the long day with a thrilling 42-41 triumph over West Vigo.
For the Stars, Jayden Johnson (113 pounds), Jorj Filler (120), Gabe Nelson (132), Ethan Stancombe (145) and Gunner Connaughton (195) all went 4-1 on the day.
“A pretty good day overall as a team,” BNL coach Chris Branam said. “Jayden Johnson was making his debut at 113 and coming out on fire. He went 4-1 on the day with three pins. We’re excited to see how he progresses over this season.
“Jorj looked dominant all day and has already shown so much growth over last season. Gabe made his debut at the lower weight class of 132. Ethan had some nailbiter matches. He has so much potential and he is one to keep your eye on as he continues to refine his technique. Gunner had a tough match to start the day, but recovered to go 4-1 on the day with four pins, which was good enough for him to be named the champion at 195 on the day.”
Johnson (pinning Cain Godsey in 30 seconds, Filler (trapping Kameron Winters in 1:15) and Junior Arellano (topping Mason Tabor in 59 seconds at 285) were the lone BNL winners against the Patriots. Winners for the Stars against George Washington included Patrell Childs (pinning Luis Jacintos in 4:48 at 106), Johnson (whipping Artez Shields in 20 seconds), Hunter Morris (trapping Jacobi Stewart in 1:07 at 138), Connaughton (topping Armonte Morgan in 1:54) and Arellano (flattening Djine Joseph in 44 seconds).

Against Danville, the Stars got wins from Filler (50 seconds over Bryce Hahn), Nelson (17 seconds over Laney Burnworth) and Connaughton (1:17 over Andrew Smith). BNL winners against Northview included Childs (52 seconds over Kayla Beckley), Johnson (1:06 over Camden East), Nelson (2:21 over Logan Moore), Stancombe (12-10 over Gilbert Clear) and Connaughton (5:54 over Tommy Gilliam).
Nelson had the clinching win in the match against the Vikings, pinning Kobe Orten in 19 seconds. Other winners for the Stars included Filler (2:42 over Caleb Sparks), Jaxson Powell (58 seconds over Christian Price, Connaughton (30 seconds over Josh Cornes) and Javi Paredes (48 seconds over Zac Judy).
“Overall, I thought today was a great day of wrestling and we continue to look better every match,” Branam said. “We’re excited to keep this progress going.”
BNL will host Seymour on Thursday.
