JASPER – Jasper won the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, to pull out a 100-86 victory over Bedford North Lawrence during boys high school swimming action at Jasper on Tuesday.
In the girls meet, the Wildcats won all but one race while rolling to a 146-28 triumph.
BNL recorded six wins in the boys meet. Alexander Swenson was a double victor, taking the 200 individual medley in 2:08.57 and the 100 butterfly in 55.74. Cole Baker also won twice, touching first in the 50 freestyle (22.16) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.25).
John Allen won the 100 free in 50.71, and he teamed with Baker, Swenson and Garrett Henson to take the 200 medley relay in 1:46.26.
“With something like nine seniors returning, Jasper had just a little more,” BNL coach Adam Young said. “However, with how a championship meet is scored, we look very good. The sectional should be a classic battle with them and I feel very good about where we are.
“We have been doing 2-a-day practices over Christmas break and everyone is truly swimming tired. I would even say exhausted, which really is a positive looking toward the conference and sectional. Any time drop at this meet was a big deal, given the circumstances, and I think it shows just how amped up everyone was to go against a quality rival.”
Emma Gabhart was the lone winner for the Stars in the girls meet. She clocked 1:09.98 in the 100 breaststroke.
“The girls had a rough go,” Young said. “We were down one due to illness, and Jasper is certainly stacked this year. I can’t say enough about the girls’ efforts. It’s so hard when you have the numbers we do this year. They show up and give their all every meet, and I think they are going to do well come championship time.”
BNL will host Columbus East and celebrate Senior Night on Jan. 6.
