PAOLI – Bedford North Lawrence finished second in the six-team Paoli Duals tournament on Saturday.
The Stars recorded a 4-1 mark, conquering Rock Creek (57-6), Providence Cristo Rey (46-12), Clarksville (37-36) and Mitchell (48-30) while falling to North Harrison (45-24). BNL’s Jayden Johnson (113 pounds), Gabe Nelson (132) and Ethan Stancombe (145) all went undefeated during the event.
“Not a bad day at all considering we are missing three out of our lineup,” BNL coach Chris Branam said. “It’s been a great week of wrestling for BNL, and I’m a very proud coach right now.”
In the opening match against the Cougars, BNL’s Jorj Filler (pinning Caden Cooper in 145 at 120), Nelson (topping Gunner Pate in 1:35) and Stancombe (flattening Pearce Hubbart in 4:38) posted wins. BNL wiped out Rock Creek with three wins on the mat as Johnson (14 seconds over Henry Ryan), Nelson (40 seconds over Tyler Rogers) and Isaac Strange (9-3 over Mason Waltz at 182) were victorious.
Nelson continued his hot streak with a 14-4 triumph over Cristo Rey’s Angel Montelongo, Samantha Biel recorded a pin win in 55 seconds at 152, and Junior Arellano got a pin at 285.
The Stars also had three mat wins against the Generals, with Nelson (42 seconds over Brody Yates), Stancombe (33 seconds over Jacob Perissi) and Jaxon Powell (3:33 over James Lemke at 160) prevailing. In the rematch with the Bluejackets, Johnson hammered Dusty Miles in 16 seconds, Stancombe decked Jason Sweet in 2:20, Powell popped Corbin Peters in 22 seconds, and Arellano topped Xander Patton in 1:46.
“Jayden has made a name for himself on the team for having some of the fastest pins of the year,” Branam said. “Gabe looked extremely sharp today. He was wrestling confident and loose, and when he’s in that headspace, he is hard to beat. Ethan had a great day, especially in the last match where he bumped up to 152 to face Mitchell’s senior and pinned the upperclassman.”
The Stars will visit Pike Central on Tuesday.
