Joseph “Smitty” Blaine Schmidt, 69, of Bedford, passed away on January 9, 2022, at I.U. Health Hospital in Bedford.
Born August 13, 1952, in Lawrence Co., he was the son of John David Schmidt and Betty Jean (Gambrel) Schmidt. Joe was a graduate of Bedford High School and attended Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. He was an artist by trade working for Johnny’s Signs, being self-employed, and most recently, HD Graphix, where he retired from in 2016. He was old school when it came to pinstriping and painting signs, all freehand. He enjoyed drawing with fine point ink and composing manuscripts.
When the weather was nice, he was always on the move, taking joy rides to Spring Mill State Park or Williams,
Indiana. He loved spending time with his family and three grandchildren. Joe was a faithful member of Work of God
Church in Mitchell.
He was the proud father of his son, Jonathon, and wife, Natasha, of Bedford and brother to siblings, David and wife, Kathy, of Temple Terrance, FL, Danny, of Bedford, Winston and wife, Liz, of Cincinnati, OH, Nancy Ashley and husband, Gregory, of Bedford. Proud grandpa of his three grandchildren, Kingston, Bryson, and Beckham, and good ole’ Uncle Joe to his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 13th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Dwight Dunbar officiating. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until the hour of service on Thursday at the mortuary. Cremation was chosen.
