INDIANAPOLIS – Today, Secretary of State Holli Sullivan’s top legislative agenda initiative, which would strengthen the security around digital absentee ballot requests, passed out of the House elections committee.
When submitting an online application for an absentee ballot, H.B. 1173 would require Indiana voters to submit either their driver’s license number or the last four digits of their social security number.
“As voting habits change and election technology progresses, it is vital that Indiana remains a leader to ensure that every vote is safe, secure, and accurately counted,” Secretary Sullivan said. “Adding this security measure allows us to stay ahead of those who may try to use digital tools to influence or change our elections. As Indiana’s chief elections officer, my top priority is preserving the integrity of our elections, so Hoosiers can remain confident when they are voting.”
Indiana offered the option to request an absentee ballot digitally for the first time in 2020.
In the 2020 General Election, Indiana saw an unprecedented number of absentee ballot applications. Nearly 250,000 of those applications were submitted electronically.
