BEDFORD – The North Lawrence Community School board meeting Thursday evening provided updates to COVID-19 cases within NLCS and discussed a new form curriculum.
NLCS Director of Learning Maggie Dainton discussed with the board members the importance of adding an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program to the school.
AVID is a college-readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college by teaching the students how to perform better in the classroom.
Dainton estimated the addition of AVID to have an initial cost of $24,900 with the three-day training for eight teachers, and would slowly lower by $6,000 per year after.
Superintendent Dr. Ty Mungle gave an update to COVID-19 cases in each of the schools. There has been a decrease in cases within the faculty and staff, but a slight increase in student cases in that same time frame.
With a total of 78 student cases as of Wednesday, Dr. Mungle thinks that the health and safety of the children and staff remain the top priority.
Other items discussed include the planned virtual learning day on Friday, January 28th that will keep the students active and busy, while the faculty hold necessary training for specific circumstances.
Lastly, Janice Neely announced her retirement from NLCS after 36 years of service working with the special needs students of NLCS that will go into effect on February 1, 2022. She will remain as a bus driver and will continue to assist with the children.
The next meetings on schedule for the NLCS Board include an Executive Session on Thursday, February 3rd, and an Executive session followed by a regular meeting on Tuesday, February 22nd.
