BEDFORD – Several surrounding counties have increased their travel advisories.
The Lawrence County Commissioners earlier today issued a yellow travel advisory for Lawrence County and we remain at yellow along with Martin and Daviess counties.
Yellow is the lowest level of the local travel advisory, which means that routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation, and individuals should use caution or avoid those areas.
Greene County is currently under an orange travel advisory.
“Conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a “watch” local travel advisory, only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended, and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations,” said Commissioner Nathan Abrams. “After conferring with Greene County Highway Superintendent, Roger Hamilton, we feel that road conditions are such that with the incoming snow they will only worsen today. That is why I have taken this action to protect the citizens of the county. Although the roads may not look dangerous now, still people on the road only increase the chance of accidents and injury.”
Also, people may start out, but as conditions worsen, they may have great difficulty getting back or not back at all. As we have said before, stay off the roads.” Abrams concluded.
An orange advisory means conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a “watch” local travel advisory, only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended, and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations.
Monroe, Brown, Bartholomew, Jackson, and Orange counties are currently under a red travel advisory.
Red is the highest level of the local travel advisory, which means that travel may be restricted to emergency management workers only. During a “warning” local travel advisory, individuals are directed to:
- A) refrain from all travel;
- (B) comply with necessary emergency measures;
- (C) cooperate with public officials and disaster services forces in executing emergency operations plans; and
- (D) obey and comply with the lawful directions of properly identified officers
