JASPER – Bedford North Lawrence junior Emma Gabhart won two sectional races and qualified for the state finals during the IHSAA sectional at Jasper on Monday night.
Gabhart won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly, reaching the state meet in two events for the second straight year. She will compete in the IHSAA finals at IUPUI on Feb. 11-12.
Gabhart, the top seed in both events following the prelims on Saturday, won the 200 IM in 2:10.96, then came back with a blistering time of 58.79 to win the butterfly.
BNL’s Shelby Slaughter, the top seed in the 500 freestyle, settled for second in a time of 5:45.10. Jasper’s Avery Henke dropped 19 seconds off her prelim time and won that race in 5:27.50.
The Stars finished seventh in the team race with 134 points. Jasper won the team title with 459 points.
Gabhart will compete in the state prelims on Friday at the Natatorium. The top eight in each event will qualify for the state championship race on Saturday, while places 9-16 (in the field of 32 competitors) will advance to the state consolation race.
