Larry Dean Dixon, 77, of Mitchell passed away at 11:28 P.M. on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born October 3, 1944, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Otis Dixon and Roxy Irene (York) Russell. He married Barbara Ikerd on February 25, 1972, and she preceded him in death on September 15, 2004.
Larry retired from Lehigh Cement Company after 42 years of service, in his time at Lehigh he worked as a Locomotive Engineer, had also worked in the quarry, and had been the union president for 20 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving two tours during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Freetown Apostolic Pentecostal Church in Freetown, IN.
Survivors include his son, Aaron Dixon and his girlfriend, Heather Woods of Bedford, and a granddaughter Alecea Clendening of Bloomington, two sisters, Dora Wittmer of Evansville, and Becky Crosby of Mitchell; four brothers: Phil Dixon and wife Susan of Oolitic, Mike Russell of Bedford, Jack Russell of North Vernon, and Roger Russell and wife Sharon of Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two sisters, Della Knight, and Patty Alberts: three brothers, Marvin Dixon, Jim Russell, and Brian Russell in infancy.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Thursday, February 17th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bro. Tim Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of the American Legion Gillen Post #33.
Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 16th at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Memorial contributions can be made to the Freetown Apostolic Pentecostal Church in memory of Larry. The family requests that guests wear masks for the safety of everyone.
