ST. JOSEPH CO. – The Indiana State Police have been requested to investigate the death of an inmate at the St. Joseph County Jail.
The Indiana State Police were contacted Monday morning, February 21, 2022, after jail staff found the inmate unresponsive in the medical isolation unit at the jail.
The inmate, Rebecca Powell, 63 of South Bend, IN, was found unresponsive in the medical isolation unit just after 4:00 a.m. this morning. Jail staff and medical staff immediately began life-saving efforts until emergency medical technicians arrived. Powell was pronounced deceased at the jail. The family of Powell has been notified.
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Powell at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker School of Medicine in Kalamazoo, MI on Thursday, February 24, 2022.
