JACKSON CO. – When people find themselves incarcerated and facing the consequences of poor life choices, it can be a turning point for some. It is a time when some people long for a new start and a new way of life and they decide walking in faith can help them continue life on a different path.
Residents Encounter Christ is an immersive experience that strives to make Jesus Christ known to men and women who are incarcerated in Indiana. The Jackson County Detention Center recently hosted its fourth annual REC event, led by New Day REC, a Columbus-based faith organization. The event took place over two weekends. The men’s REC was Feb. 25, 26, and 27 while women had a REC opportunity on March 4, 5, and 6.
Sheriff Rick Meyer said he has witnessed lives changed as a result of the REC experience. “I have the highest praise for these committed volunteers who give so willingly of their time to help those who are in desperate need of a new way of life,” said Sheriff Meyer. “Residents Encounter Christ leads those willing to come along on a new journey – a journey to walk with Jesus that can truly change lives for the better.”
New Day REC is a three-day evangelistic retreat that took place at the Jackson County Detention Center with a large number of both male and female participants. New Day REC explains that residents and community members experience God and spiritual formation through talks covering the basics of the Christian life, table discussions, worship, prayer, communion, and special times of reflection.
This was the fourth year New Day REC has held the event in the Jackson County Detention Center.
“I am so encouraged by the number of men and women who chose to participate in this REC weekend,” said Sheriff Meyer. “It’s important to remember that poor choices do not have to define the rest of one’s life. There is a positive way forward and an opportunity for a new way of life. New Day REC helps those who are willing to journey with them take steps toward walking with Jesus – the one true way to lasting peace.”
