UPDATE: Firefighters battle wildland and house fire on Rariden Hill Road

MITCHELL – Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to a burn pile fire that had gotten out of control at 2:17 p.m. Monday at 2275 Rariden Hill Road.

“While responding dispatch advised the residence was now involved in the fire,” said Chief Paul Gillespie. “We found a three-story residence involved in the fire. All three floors were on fire on the east side of the home. We found there were several burn piles, the woods, and an RV on fire.”

Mitchell Fire Department established a water supply for firefighters to battle the blazes. Huron Volunteer Fire Department was requested for additional tanker support.

Firefighters from the Hoosier National Forestry, Marion Township, and Mitchell worked well together to bring the fire under control.

“The wildland fire burnt approximately two acres with minor extension onto a neighbor’s property,” added Chief Gillespie. “The home and RV were destroyed in the blaze. The Red Cross was contacted for the displaced family. Crews remained on scene until 7:08 p.m. . Homeowners were advised that due to the extent of the damage the fire would smolder and if there were any problems to call us back.”

The fire did reignite at 8:50 p.m. and firefighters responded and put out the fire.

No injuries were reported.
