SHAWSWICK – The Spring Carnival has been a favorite tradition at Shawswick Elementary School over the past couple of years, but due to COVID-19, the school has not held the event since 2019.
That is set to change, as the Shawswick Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) will be bringing the carnival back on Friday, April 8th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the school on 71 Shawswick School Rd.
The carnival is free for all to attend and will feature 24 games/booths for those to enjoy. Each booth will require tickets to play, most only requiring one ticket, with tickets set at 50¢ per ticket, and there will be a winner each and every time.
The most popular game is Cake Walk. It’s played by walking around in a circle and when the music stops, participants get to a numbered mat placed on the ground. A number is then randomly drawn and the person on the mat with that matching number wins the cake, or other donated store bought baked good.
The Shawswick Elementary Cheerleaders will also host a temporary tattoo table during the carnival. A build your own necklace or bangle bracelet booth will also be on-site for those interested in making their own jewelry, one ticket will get two charms to use.
A concession stand will also be open with carnival style foods. Prices will vary from 75¢ to $3.00 and include hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, cotton candy, and much more.
In the past, this carnival used to fund the Shawswick PTO Scholarship. That program is now fully funded, so this year’s event will use the funds raised to save up for much needed playground equipment upgrades.
According to the Shawswick PTO, Shawswick Elementary School has the oldest playground equipment in the corporation, and consolidation doubled the student enrollment. Due to this growth, the PTO wants to improve the play areas and add more features to accommodate the school properly.
