BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence High School announced it will offer new summer programs this year to help provide students with even more opportunities to succeed in the classroom.
Algebra Readiness and a Credit Recovery Intensive course will be available for students, completely free of charge. These two courses are in addition to the Virtual Summer School program, which offers students the opportunity to earn credits in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and P.E./Health.
Students will learn in the classroom from 8 a.m. to noon. Monday through Friday. The three-week programs will run from May 31 to June 17, lunch will be provided to students as well as transportation to and from BNL.
Algebra Readiness is a brand new program offered to incoming ninth-grade students, meant to prepare them for the course they’ll experience in their freshman year. The program offers a unique hands-on approach to learning, as students will join a “tribe” in the classroom and compete in challenges, earn points, and achieve levels throughout the duration of the course. This non-traditional approach allows students to experience math from a different perspective, making the subject more fun and interesting, especially for students that are challenged in a traditional math classroom.
“We have to continue to evolve the way we teach our students as our world continues to change around them,” said Deidre Deckard, math instructor at BNL. “The new Algebra Readiness course does that by integrating motivational activities into the curriculum to increase student engagement and willingness to learn.”
Credit Recovery Intensive, an in-person program, is designed as an online learning platform to be completed in the classroom with teacher leadership. This approach allows students to complete the program at their own pace and catch up on credits they may have fallen behind in with more one-on-one instruction.
“Over the past couple of years, the education industry has experienced a number of challenges for students, including ones never seen before due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Jenna Clark, Assistant Principal at BNL. “We are constantly thinking of new, innovative methods to meet the needs of all students who learn best in a variety of ways.”
