BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence worked on its collective tan and its collective game during a long day in the sun and on the asphalt courts.
The Stars (4-3) swept past Martinsville 5-0 in the morning session of the round-robin format, then fell 4-1 to New Albany in the afternoon match on Saturday.
BNL disposed of the Artesians in quick fashion. Becca Epping conquered Alyssa McGauley 6-3, 6-2 at No.1 singles, Rachel Kidd rolled past Kait Collins 6-1, 6-0 at No.2, and Italy Lewis fought off Katherine Jackson 6-0, 4-6, 10-4 (in a super tiebreaker) at No.3.
In doubles, Bella Stigall and Mallory Pride overpowered Katie Fulkerson and Ainsley Lowder 6-1, 6-3 at No.1, while Kenley Craig and Izzy Alldredge thumped Hannah Niese and Selah Wolff 6-1, 6-0 at No.2.
“Everybody played really solid and played well,” BNL coach Joni Stigall said.
In the second match, the Bulldogs had more firepower. BNL’s only win came from Lewis at No.3 singles as she stopped Olivia Randall 6-1, 6-1.
New Albany swept the doubles with Lily Meyer and Natalie Saydera clipping Stigall and Pride 6-0, 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreaker). Maci Crone and Claire Stock stopped Craig and Alldredge 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). In singles, Claire Meyer zipped past Epping 6-0, 6-0 at No.1, and Marisa Witt topped Kidd 6-4, 6-2 at No.2.
“They’re just a good team,” Stigall said. “We’ll probably see them again (in the Hoosier Hills Conference tournament), so now we know what to work on. There are a couple of courts where they’re just better than us, but a couple of them they’re not. So we could have gotten one more. Maybe next time.”
The Stars will host Bloomfield on Monday.
