BLOOMINGTON – IU Health has awarded the demolition contract for the legacy IU Health Bloomington Hospital on Second Street to Indianapolis-based demolition contractor, Renascent, Inc.
“The Renascent team’s expertise and focus on safety are impressive,” said IU Health South Central Region Design & Construction Director Suzan Kallus, AIA. “With over 30 years in the business, their track record reassures us that they are the right people to complete this project.”
“Having worked closely with IU Health on several jobs, we’re proud to partner with them yet again,” said Rick Hall, Renascent’s Director of Project Management. “Though we’ve now done extensive work in 12 different states—including many hospitals—our roots here in Indiana make this job even more rewarding. We look forward to applying our expert skills and tenacious approach to safety to deliver another successful project to IU Health.”
Equipment has started moving onto the site in preparation for demolition, which will begin in May 2022. The company will use machines to tear down the building in a controlled manner, level by level, with no implosion involved.
“We want to ensure this process is as safe and as least disruptive as possible for the surrounding neighborhoods,” said Kallus. “Dust production will be monitored and controlled utilizing a high-pressure water cannon, and the team will keep the community in mind when creating work schedules.”
Work hours for the site will be 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., Monday – Friday, and 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturdays. National holidays and Sundays will be free of work at the facility.
Kallus said, “Demolition activities are expected to be completed in 2023.”
The City of Bloomington has purchased the hospital property and has a comprehensive development plan in place. Visit bloomingtonhospitalsite.com/ to learn about the city’s redevelopment plans.
