BEDFORD – Rain, rain went away, allowing Bedford North Lawrence to play. And the Stars took advantage of the fast-changing weather with a quick victory over Bloomfield on Monday afternoon.
Spurred by a doubles sweep, BNL conquered Bloomfield 4-1. The two doubles tandems dropped only three games as the Stars improved to 5-3.
Bella Stigall and Mallory Pride cruised past Adalyn Wiseman and Kinley Moody 6-0, 6-1 at No.1, while Kenley Craig and Izzy Alldredge rolled over Ashlyn Stahl and Ansley Ross 6-1, 6-1 at No.2.
“We are thankful the rain stopped and we got to play,” BNL coach Joni Stigall said. “We need all the matches we can get. It was a good win for us on a nice night.
“Our doubles were in control of their courts the entire match. I didn’t have to coach, they just got to play.”
BNL also dominated the lower singles. Becca Epping bounced Bloomfield’s Lucy Allen 6-1, 6-0 at No.2, while Italy Lewis vaulted over Emma Vaught 6-2, 6-1 at No.3.
“Italy played the best she has played all year,” Stigall said. “She hustled and hit the ball well tonight. It’s good to see her play hard and with confidence. Becca was just on fire. She was very smart and made really good placement decisions. She figured out her opponent’s weaknesses and played to those. It’s great to watch her get better. She works so hard.”
The Cardinals got on the board at No.1 singles with Gracie Lowry topping Rachel Kidd 6-0, 6-0.
“Rachel played a player who very rarely made a mistake or error, and literally got every single ball back no matter how good the shot,” Stigall said. “That kind of player is so hard to play. It takes patience that most of us do not have, and Rachel didn’t have tonight. Rachel had some great shots and played well, but frustration sets in quickly when nothing you do seems to work.”
BNL will return to action in the Scottsburg Invitational on Friday.
