MONROE COUNTY – The Monroe County community expressed a need for waste tire services. Now the Monroe County Solid Waste Management District (District) is providing the service.
The tire program became effective July 1st, 2022. Since whole tires cannot be landfilled per state law, they are not put in the bulky item bin that rotates among rural recycling centers. Tires will only be accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste facility at the South Walnut Recycling Center for a fee. Restrictions apply.
Tires can be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste facility at the South Walnut Recycling Center, located at 3400 South Walnut Street in Bloomington. A variety of tires will be accepted, however, restrictions and fees will apply. A limit of five tires per person will be implemented.

Why dispose of tires?
Tires not recycled, properly repurposed, or disposed of, are health hazards. They can be fire hazards, road hazards, leech chemicals into the ground, breed mosquitoes and attract rodents, and are unsightly.
Tires are accepted only at the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility at the South Walnut Recycling Center.
