BEDFORD – Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham announced Tuesday morning at the commissioner’s meeting that the jail population has decreased thanks to the work of judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys.
The population this morning was at 109 or at 61 percent capacity.
“I want to thank the courts and the Department of Corrections for getting people who don’t need to be in our local jail out of our facility,” he added.
There are currently 89 males, 20 females, six Level 6 felons and three Department of Corrections holds being held in the local jail.
Today the jail inspector will be at the facility and a full report will be released after his inspection is complete.
Sheriff Branham also announced the department has received a grant from a Public Safety Improvement grant from Hoosier Uplands to purchase new GPS systems for 10 police vehicles at a cost of approximately $407 for each vehicle.
“Our current systems are out of date and pose a safety hazard and efficiency issues for our officers,” added Sheriff Branham.
