LAWRENCE COUNTY – The 2022 Ugly Duck Derby brought in over $35,000 raised for the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County on Saturday, proving another successful year in the annual event.
This event continues to be the largest fundraiser for the club, helping to provide services to the youth of Lawrence County every day. The event continues to show the loving support from the Lawrence County Community, something that Chief Professional Officer Frank Decker is thankful for.
“It continues to surprise me the amount of support we get in our county to help the youth,” said Decker. “This event could not be possible without the community or our sponsors.”
Sponsors of this years event included:
- ReMax Acclaimed Properties
- Hobson Automotive Group
- Bedford Federal Savings Bank
- WBIW/WQRK/LiteFM
- Walmart
- Sipes Body & Glass
- Tri County Rental
- The City of Bedford
The event kicked off with a big splash contest between Decker and some of the Boys and Girls Club staff. Decker said that if anyone beat his splash, he would get them a $15 gift card to a business of their choice. The competition came down to a splash-off between Decker and Youth Development Professional Kalandra Sears, with the latter being awarded the victory.
Additionally, Boys and Girls Club board member Ryan Sullivan challenged J.D. Powell to make a Big Splash for an extra $1000 donation. JD obliged making his entry in style with a backsplash off the low board.
The ducks were hoisted to the top of the slide while the big splash contest was going on and was ready to be released, sending a wave of rubber ducks through the course to the finish line.
The $4,000 Grand Prize winner, Julie Sullivan, and the $2,500 Blue Duck winner, Joe Mackey, both decided to donate their winnings to the Boys & Girls Club, a move that Decker wasn’t anticipating.
“We have no expectations of winners doing this but when someone does donate the winnings back it is a very humbling and an appreciative moment,” Decker said. “I cannot express enough gratitude from myself, our board of directors, our staff, and our members for them to do that.”
