ELLETTSVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence edged Mooresville in the consolation round of the Edgewood Invitational during boys high school tennis action on Saturday.
The Stars suffered a 4-1 loss to Owen Valley in the first round, then bounced back to sweep the doubles while posting a 3-2 victory over the Pioneers.
In the consolation round, BNL’s Nate Pemberton and Carter Kimmel completed an undefeated day with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Ian Moseley and Sullivan Zollman at No.2 doubles. Jayden Kemp and Drew Stephenson won a second-set tiebreaker to stop Braeden Daggy and Tye Veronda-Link 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at No.1.
Graham Turner clipped Lennon Zollman 6-2, 6-3 at No.1 singles for the third team point.
“This tourney always provides a good test and our guys played well,” BNL coach Chris Kurtz said. “Close matches, and especially tiebreakers, are always exciting, and we had a few of those today. We were able to come out on top each time. We’ve been focused on the mental part of tennis this week, and winning those big points in tight situations shows we’re getting better with that.”
In the opening round against the Patriots, Pemberton and Kimmel won a lengthy supertiebreaker in the third set to nip Carlos Trevino and Cason Robertson 5-7, 6-4, 14-12.
Owen Valley won the team title with a 4-1 win over Edgewood (which topped Mooresville 3-2 in the other first-round clash) in the championship match.
BNL will visit Paoli on Monday.
