BEDFORD – Former Lawrence County Sheriff Jerry Allen Ross Sr., of Mitchell, passed away on Monday, September 26th. He was 78.
Ross had been suffering from some health issues for some time.
Ross retired from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department after 26 years of service. He was sheriff for eight of those years from 1987-1990.
Sheriff Ross loved Lawrence County, its citizens and especially loved those that worked for the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.
“He was a good community servant,” said current Sheriff Mike Branham. “He was good to work for and with. He was the second sheriff I worked under and he promoted me to a deputy. He was a really good guy and supported me when I made the decision to run for sheriff.”
Sheriff Branham said Ross will be missed.
“Every year Jerry and his wife Charlotte would sit on the same corner and every year I would look for them. It was sad because on Sunday Jerry was not there in his regular spot,” added Branham.
Private funeral services were held.
The Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes in Bedford has been entrusted with the arrangements.
