BEDFORD – Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham announced Tuesday morning at the commissioner’s meeting that the jail population continues to be below capacity thanks to the work of judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys.
The population this morning was 109 or at 61 percent capacity.
There are currently 90 males, 19 females, four Level 6 felons and six Department of Corrections holds, and two parole holds being housed in the local jail.
Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer reported the Mitchell Persimmon Festival was a success with no incidents.
“We did have a rainstorm come through the area, but they followed their plans that were in place and nothing had to be canceled,” added Luchauer.
Luchauer also praised everyone who participated in a mock emergency disaster involving a crop dusting plane.
“We had a crop duster from Vincennes on the scene with his plane and learned a lot,” she added. “Not only do they do crop dusting but they may also be spreading seed. Firefighters were allowed to go through the plane.”
Commissioner Wally Branham also participated.
“Val did a wonderful job,” he added. “It is imperative to have a plan in place and for those firefighters to learn how to shut down and turn something off when a plane crashes.”
